The Energies of Sun and Moon

A balance between darkness and light, lunar and solar energies; a reverie to honor the Winter Solstice.

An excerpt from Transcending Sexual Trauma: Self-Awareness Tools and Nature Based Practices to Cultivate Inner Healing

As I highlight the paradoxical, metaphorical essences of Sun and Moon, I reflect on the emotional polarities felt by all humans and the internal contrasts within myself. Developing deeper awareness of my dynamic differences within, has allowed me to create a greater sense of balance, in all ways.

“Look at the immense light we call the sun. If it stops shining, the flow of our life will also stop, and so the sun is our second heart, our heart outside of our body. This immense ‘heart’ gives all life on Earth the warmth necessary for existence.”

– Thich Nhat Hanh

The energy of Sun governs consciousness, vitality, and power. It becomes manifest when I use my intellect to solve problems and my physical momentum to get things done. In human form, a good parental figure should bestow upon us the capacities of confidence and strength. As my trauma includes abuse endured by my human father, it took me some time to realize that I had turned away from the shining attributes meant to lead me through life.

Through deep reflection on the metaphor of Sun as my vital life-force energy, I made conscious efforts to absorb Sun’s luminosity each time I went outside. I’ve always loved being in the warmth of sunlight, so it was easy for me to intentionally bask in the qualities of warmth, vigor, and light. Over time, as I envisioned myself being infused with these subtle energies, I experienced a felt sense of inner support. To be able to embrace my innate essences of developed will, dynamic wisdom, and unbridled confidence, has been some of the most rewarding work of reclaiming my power.

The energy of Moon governs emotions, intuition, and mystery. It becomes manifest when I receive creative inspirations or whenever I open to my feelings. One of the most profound energies of Nature, easily accessible, naturally attractive, and deeply nourishing, Moon has been the constant companion of all living beings ever since the dawn of time. It’s been well understood for thousands of years that the luminous force of the full Moon affects all life on Earth. Flowers come into supreme bloom, baby animals grow more rapidly, tides swell, and we experience a sense of heightened awareness. The new Moon is traditionally associated with women’s menstrual cycles and denotes a time of introspection and new beginnings. Earth becomes reinvented with every Moon cycle, so when I consciously connect with the waxing and waning rhythms of Moon, I flow effortlessly within the cadence of life.

On the full Moon of each month, I like to give thanks for what has come to completion during this phase and reflect on what shall evolve in the next cycle of life. This verse came to me many years ago under the glow of the full Moon. It continually serves as a prayer that illuminates answers to questions within, through my trust in celestial guidance.

Mother Moon your seeds I sow

Tell me what I need to know

Show me where I need to grow

Bless me with your healing light

Keep me safe and far from fright

Shine your golden glow on me

As I will so it shall be

As I entertain a continual flow of my solar and lunar energetic states, I recognize the ease within this interrelationship. From this deeper self-knowledge, I can expand to include more reverence for, and greater flow within, all of Earth’s quantum essences.
